We
are a small privately owned company, which is Australian owned, orginally
based in Quilpie, but is now based in Morven South West Queensland, Australia.
Our back ground has been in the rural industry, involving, Sheep, Cattle
& Horses.
We
started making these bags when our children started to acquire their own
saddlery, and we could no longer fit everything inside the vehicle.
We
decided to colour co-ordinate the childrens gear bags so that they all
had the same colour saddle, bridle and clothes bags. This helped to eliminate
some of the fighting when it came to getting ready to saddle horses or
have a shower.
Our
friends then started asking if they could get some made, and things have
just gone on from there.
The
Gidgee Smith Story
Our range of products includes basic models which follow through to designer
products in each size . The majority of the products are made from a PVC
Coated Polyester which is a tough and durable product, that is both water
and dust resistant. Bags can be personalised by adding your Business Name
& Details, Personal Name or other Graphics. When designing and making
these products we took into account the harsh conditions that most rural
workers and competitors have to face. We use heavy duty Zips, Handles,
and also have a double base on these bags. the double base gives you two
layers on the base, which also protects the bag handles, which go all
the way around the bag. We also sew around the inside of the bag twice
to made it stronger. We can also sew a leather patch on the bags from
the bridle size up, that can be stamped or branded, these patches are
now an optional extra. They have a cattle tag with our company details
for a zip pull, and the bags are individually numbered. The Gidgee Smith
Story Gidgee Smith Products is a small Australian owned company based
in Morven South West Queensland. The business was first set up when we
were located in Quilpie a little further west, which is the gateway to
the Channel Country. From the Beginning I didn't really plan to start
up this business it basically just happened. Having an active and sporting
family, we are involved in everything from horse riding, bike riding,
football, netball, cricket, swimming, highland dancing and music, I set
out to make a few saddle and gear bags for our 3 children. I basically
went over budget on the sewing machine that I purchased to make these
bags, so when my friends saw them and wanted some I happily agreed. Having
spent 20 years in the rural industry centred around sheep, cattle and
goats, the on going drought forced us to look for a new source of income.
My husband started work with Landmark in Quilpie, and I continued to run
the shearing contract, sewing on the week-ends and days off. In 2004 we
discovered that we were going to have a new member in the family, so we
sold the shearing contract and I stayed home sewing on a full time basis.
The name Gidgee Smith originated from our last name Smith, and one of
the well know trees to the Quilpie area the "Gidyea Tree"> The Reason
for Gidgee being spelt different to the tree spelling , is due to the
fact the my first name, Kylee is spelt with an "ee", which has proved
to be a little tricky over the years. I manufacture all of the products
myself, and have relied on many great friends and family for support and
inspiration. My main goal is to provide a bag that will withstand the
rough and tumble of every day country living. I wanted to make something
that would last. Our product range has steadily grown over the last couple
of years, and I suspect that it will continue to do so, as clients come
up with new ideas, as well as improving on the old ones. We have already
released 5 new products to our range this year alone. I originally started
selling bags to people involved in the horse sports, and now our clientele
has grown to Riggers, Ringers, Miners, Shearers, Boarding School students,
Truck Drivers, Rock Climbers, Mustering teams, Bull Riders, Cowboys ,
Cowgirls, lots of Grandmas, and so on. We make many different sizes of
bags as well as other different products, in both plain, mutli-coloured
and personalised styles. Most of our personalised bags are unique, and
just that little bit different. We have also included the option to have
your bag named as well. We launched our web site in October 2004. The
site has a display of all our products. We aim to provide a good reliable
product, that comes with good reliable service. We welcome new business
and, looking after return clients is a major priority. Our range of products
